We all must face that decision, sooner or later. No matter if we’re just starting out in business or have been grinding for longer than we care to remember, eventually we all come to a fork in the road; a choice on the journey that can have a lasting influence our future. This important decision may hit us right out of the gate, when we first get started, or it may lie in wait, ambushing us long after we are up and running; popping up when we least expect it.
So, what is this all-important decision? What could be so crucial to our future that you took time to read about it today?
The choice we’re talking about can be summed up by the old business axiom “Location, location, location.” But, it’s not a physical location we’re talking about. Yes, your physical location is certainly important, and, without a doubt can make or break your business. Imagine trying to open a liquor store in the heart of a Baptist community or trying to sell real estate in the middle of a barren desert. Obviously, these business owners would have a much better chance of surviving their first year in business with a better physical location. Nothing beats serving a client base that actually has a desire for your product!
No, the spot we’re talking about isn’t a physical site. This location occupies a psychological place; cerebral real estate; a decision that you must ponder and decide in your mind.
The decision we’re talking about is, more or less, about just that: having more or having less.
Do you want your business to have more? Taking on more responsibility; offering more to your clients; creating more impact in your space; providing more value.
Or do you move in the opposite direction and choose less. Staying in the same place; taking on less risk; putting forth less effort to move forward. Basically, being content with the status quo.
It’s a tough choice to ponder, as there really is no right or wrong answer to the question. This is a very personal decision and is something that cannot be decided for us; each of us must make this call for ourselves. But it cannot be avoided; it’s a choice that’s coming for all of us. If you experience any level of success in your business, it’s a decision that, eventually, we will all have to face.
While there are many different variables to consider when making this choice, it really boils down to one thing: what type of influence do we want to have in our space? Are we looking to toil in obscurity, collecting a paycheck and getting through the day without anyone even knowing that we were here? Or, do we want to have an influence on our industry, giving our all to our career in the hopes of making a difference, making the world a little nicer place and possibly helping to make things better for others in our industry?
Whatever we decide, it’s our choice. No one can choose for us, and no one can force our hand. It’s all on us. Only you know what’s best for you, and only you can choose whether you want to give more or give less. So, be sure you choose the path that’s right for you.
In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take.
