If it seems like there are more home inspectors out there than ever before, it’s because there are. Like almost every other industry we can think of, the competition for clients is more ferocious than ever, and it’s not going to get easier any time soon.
It used to be that there were only a handful of dominant inspectors, and they stuck around for a long time, gobbling up all the business there was to be had.
But not anymore. The landscape has changed, and it’s (likely) never going back to the “good old days.”
Used to be that powerful real estate agents acted as gatekeepers, deciding who was going to be successful and who wasn’t. If you didn’t kiss the ring, your business was doomed to a second-rate existence. Now, not so much.
Yes, there are still influential agents who fashion themselves as kingmakers, but their influence is waning. New media has seen to that. Nowadays, anyone with access to the internet and social media can be their own advocate. We’re no longer dependent on agents for juice, we can make our own juice. And many new inspectors are doing just that.
Social media campaigns, pushing video content every day, taking advantage of Google AdWords, and similar tactics have opened the market for all players, not just a chosen few.
It used to be that you had to wait your turn, but no longer. New players now have the means to push themselves to the top of the heap without the help of anyone else, and they’re doing it more and more, disrupting the status quo at every turn.
That’s not to say that real estate agents are no longer an important part of our business, as it’s important to have a good working relationship with them for the benefit of our mutual clients. It’s just that they’re no longer an inspector’s only avenue to success.
In today’s modern, interconnected world, we no longer need approval from the gatekeeper agents to conduct business.
Now, the only obstacle between us and success is ourselves.
