Whatever the Cost

There is nothing in this life, from which we derive some benefit, that does not come at a cost.

attempting to balance your home inspection career

Even the most innocuous event, like sitting on a sandy beach watching the sunset, comes with a built-in opportunity cost. When we do something that we would otherwise consider to be happening for free, like looking at the sky or sitting down watching nature, it cost us something.

Whatever we choose to do, no matter how large or small, comes at some type of cost. Instead of looking at the stars, we could be doing something that’s producing income. Instead of working one for one more client, we could be spending time with loved ones, creating life-long memories.

We could be doing almost anything else besides the thing that we’re currently choosing to do, and that forces upon us an opportunity cost. Opportunity cost is defined in the Oxford Languages dictionary as “the loss of potential gain from other alternatives when one alternative is chosen” over the others.

Every choice we make comes at a cost.

What are we costing ourselves?

It’s entirely up to us, what we choose to do. Unless we’re still living at home with our Mom (or we’re married…), we get to decide how we spend our time. When push comes to shove, we’re the one’s pulling the strings.

No matter what we decide to do with our time, whether it’s watching a video or cruising social media, we should make sure that the experience we’re currently having is worth the cost we’re paying to have it.

Is there something else we could be doing that makes more sense?

When we step back and look at the big picture, does it look like we made a smart choice when we decided on this activity?

If you’re like most of us, the answer to that question is probably no.

trying to fool yourself in your home inspection business

Don’t get me wrong; there’s nothing wrong with enjoying your life. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. We’ve just got to make sure that we don’t allow the fun take over and forget to take care of the parts of our lives that really matter.

If we don’t take care of our business, it gets really hard to enjoy the rest of our lives.
