It can be hard, especially in today’s world of overwhelming information, to stay up to date. We decide that we want to stay educated on our subject of choice, but quickly become bogged down by the sheer volume of information we think we’ve got to tackle.
First, we’re intimidated by the amount of knowledge we think we need to acquire to stay on top of our game. Then we move to feeling overwhelmed, as there’s no way in the world that we’ll ever be able to learn all this stuff! And finally, we arrive at despair. Since we can’t possibly do it all, we decide to do nothing: we quit; give up; throw in the towel. We convince ourselves that it’s an impossible task, so why should we even try.
We forget that no one knows all the facts. Even Albert Einstein, arguably the greatest mind of our time, didn’t know everything.
Socrates (another great mind) is quoted as saying “Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.”
It’s impossible to know everything, so why do we beat ourselves up over not being able to achieve the unattainable?
The important thing is that we remember to keep kindling the flame.
